The Music of Poetry and Poetry of Music

Poet Gregory Byrd and cellist Carlyn Byrd will alternate reading poetry and playing pieces by Bach, Schumann and others.  Gregory Byrd’s poems resonate with themes of Florida, of the working class, of cancer, joy and loss.  Carlyn and Greg have performed this program for the St. Petersburg College Master Learners, and, in 2017 at the Dunedin Public Library.

A Fulbright fellow, Greg’s poems have appeared widely and most recently won the Robert Phillips Prize for The Name for the God Who Speaks.  You can find more about his work at gregorybyrd.org. Carlyn Byrd is a Bachelors of Music candidate in Cello Performance at the UCF School of Music.  She has played with many orchestras and groups including Pinellas Youth Symphony, Suncoast Symphony, the UCF symphony orchestra and the UCF cello choir.  Carlyn teaches cello, violin and piano at the New World School of Music and performs with the Classern Quartet.  More info about Carly can be found at https://carlynbyrd.wixsite.com/mysite
